David Hocking Comments: While we appreciate the depth to which this article goes in explaining the Jewish Festival of Shavuot (Pentecost - Greek name), we have some questions. First, the account of this festival in Leviticus 23 seems to teach that the counting of the seven weeks does NOT begin with the Day of Passover itself, but rather it counts from the weekly Shabat (Sabbath) that follows the week in which Passover occurs. That means that the Day of Shavuot (Pentecost) always falls on Sunday! Also, there was no mention in the Rabbi’s remarks concerning the events recorded in Acts 2 when the church was born, comprised of both Jews and Gentiles who had been born again through their faith in the Jewish Messiah. That church was primarily Jewish. 3000 Jews believed the message of Shimon (Peter) that day in the courtyards of the Temple Mount, and over 5000 men, not counting women and children, a few days later (Acts 3). Flavius Josephus (the Roman historian at the time of Titus Vespasian the Roman general who laid siege to Jerusalem in 70 AD) reports that the original Jewish Messianic believers comprised over 100,000 people by the time of the Roman invasion. This is not a fable, myth, or fabrication of Christians - it is a well documented fact that cannot be ignored! SHAVUOT (PENTECOST) IS THE JEWISH FESTIVAL THAT CELEBRATES THE BRINGING OF BOTH JEWS AND GENTILES INTO THE BODY OF MESSIAH! (Note: From early church history it appears most of the 100,000 followers of the Messiah in Jerusalem at the time of the Roman siege were spared because of the prophecies given by Jesus (Yeshua) before His Crucifixion 38 years earlier.)

This week Jews
will celebrate Hag Ha Shavuot, also known
as the Feast of Weeks or the Feast of Pentecost. The feast is held on the 6th
of Sivan on the Hebrew calendar. The date of Shavuot is directly linked to
that of Passover. Christian churches in the West celebrated Pentecost on May
11, but Shavuot follows almost a month later because it is a Jewish leap year
(you can read more about this in our article on Passover titled
A
Question of Dates).
The Torah - the five books of Moses - details seven feasts during the Hebrew
calendar. The first three feasts are in the spring, in the month of Nisan:
Passover, the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and the Feast of First Fruits. These
feasts are predictive of the First Coming of Jesus (Yeshua).
In between the spring and fall feasts, fifty days after the Feast of First
Fruits, there is the Feast of Pentecost. This feast, celebrated this week, is
associated with the Church. The Birth of the Church appears to be a
fulfillment of the Feast of Pentecost. (It is interesting to note that this is
the only feast in which leavened bread is ordained.)
The last three feasts are in the fall, in the month of Tishri: the Feast of
Trumpets, the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), and the Feast of Tabernacles.
These are associated with His Second Coming.
The timing of the Feast of Pentecost is based on Leviticus 23:16 which points
to "the morrow after the seventh sabbath" (fifty days) after the Feast of
First Fruits. The Greek word Pentecost
means "the fiftieth day." Since the Passover was on the 14th of Nisan, and
there were three days to the Red Sea crossing, then 46 days into the
wilderness, and three days of Moses' preparation, this is deemed to correspond
to the 49 day interval between the Feast of First Fruits (17th of Nisan) and
the Feast of Pentecost (6th of Sivan).
The Feast of Pentecost is associated with the birth of Israel and the giving
of the Law in Exodus 19. Thus, it is also called the Feast of Revelation.
Another name for the Feast of Pentecost is Hag
Ha Kazir, The Feast of Harvest, since it is celebrated at the time of the
"first harvest."
A study of the Feast of Pentecost is not complete without a review of the Book
of Ruth. The Jewish observance of the Feast of Weeks has always included the
reading of this particular book. It is provocative to note the interesting
parallels relating to the Church. This elegant love story exemplifies the role
of the goel, or kinsman-redeemer. As we
examine Boaz's role, we notice that he, in many ways, pre-figures our own
kinsman-redeemer, Jesus Christ. Through his act of redemption, Boaz returns
Naomi (Israel) to her land, and also takes Ruth (a Gentile) as his wife. This
suggests a parallel with the Church as the Gentile bride of the
kinsman-redeemer.
The Feasts of Israel, set by God, are not only commemorative in a historical

Through the prophet Ezekiel (a thousand years after they were destroyed), God tells us why He destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah ...

In these verses, God links open homosexuality in a society to sinful 'pride' and 'arrogance'... the sin of Satan. Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed ('cleansed' with fire) because they were filled with pride and arrogance while flaunting their sexual immorality and their homosexuality openly before God. They mocked God and they had no fear of God. They were also found guilty of having 'fullness of food' without acknowledging God who provided it, and having 'an abundance of idleness' in the land (basically they ate, drank, watched TV, and allowed their Gay "Pride" parades, while filling the lusts of their eyes and the lusts of their flesh ... the people had become so de-sensitized to sin they even stood by as their 'gays' tried to 'gang-rape' the two men/angels God sent to warn Lot ... and their bars, shopping malls, and pornography web-sites were bustling) ... while their worthless priests, rabbis, ministers, and 'reverends' were assuring the people in the pews that God's Word and God's Law didn't really mean what it said and didn't really apply to them and they could continue to do whatever felt good or right in 'their own eyes,' even when in direct opposition to God's Law. All of this reflected their lack of belief and their arrogant and rebellious attitudes toward God and His Word. Sin meant nothing to them and there was no fear of God. Would these charges indict and convict any people or nation(s) you know today? God's judgment against Sodom was was also given as a warning! The Bible warns the coming 'Apocalypse' will be like the judgment against Sodom (only worse), and this time it will come against the whole world! Our time is short. God is pleading with us to stop (repent of) our sinful ways and return to Him before it's too late. "By causing them (babies) to pass through the fire ..." Back then, unwanted babies were 'offered' to a false god 'Molech' (a god of lust and pleasure) by placing the baby onto the glowing red-hot arms of a small bronze statue which was placed in the fire. Do a study of Molech (an idol, false god) or passing babies 'through the fire' in the Bible and you will find God will judge a nation (and a world) for the killing of babies for convenience. God says a lot about this killing of unwanted babies ('passing sons and daughters through the fire') in the Bible. The technology we now use to kill these 'unwanted' babies is different, but the intent is exactly the same. Now, instead of calling them 'priests' we call them 'doctors,' and instead of burning the babies alive (passing them 'through the fire'), we cut them into little pieces while they're alive and call it 'abortion.' God sees it and it causes Him to cry out in agony and anger. This is one more reason why the coming Apocalypse is also called 'the Day of God's Wrath' which will come upon a (morally) "corrupt" and "violent" generation. Also, the Bible warns us that 'not only those who do such things, but also all those who approve of those who do such things' will be held just as guilty. Please remember, our God is a forgiving God who is filled with grace and mercy, and even those who have done or approved of such things can still be washed clean and forgiven through the 'blood of the Lamb of God,' our Lord, the only One who can now save us from our sins, Jesus-Yeshua the promised Messiah.
