According to Britannica.com, a fifth column refers to any group or faction of subversive agents and supporters who attempt to undermine a nation's solidarity.
Emilio Mola Vidal, a Nationalist general during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), originally coined the term. As four of his army columns moved on Madrid, the general referred to his militant supporters within the capital as his "fifth column," intent on undermining the loyalist government from within.
So the fifth column is a group of secret sympathizers or supporters of an enemy within defense lines or national borders.
The reality is many "anti-war" ... and now "anti-everything"... activists don't even realize they were duped and their "causes" were spawned and funded by Russian-Soviet intelligence services. Russia's Lenin is quoted as calling them "useful idiots" ...
Now consider why there are no "anti-war" movements in Russia, China, North Korea, Cuba, Iran ... and whose military has the "anti-war" movement weakened ... and what nations' militaries have benefited from our "anti-war" movement? Remember, during the Clinton years he unilaterally reduced the size of our military (men, ships, planes, etc.) by almost half ... while Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran have grown and strengthened theirs.
