Day 346

Daily Bible Reading

(ESV: Through The Bible)

Hosea 12-14 (Listen)

12:1 Ephraim feeds on the wind
  and pursues the east wind all day long;
they multiply falsehood and violence;
  they make a covenant with Assyria,
  and oil is carried to Egypt.

The Lord's Indictment of Israel and Judah

The Lord has an indictment against Judah
  and will punish Jacob according to his ways;
  he will repay him according to his deeds.
In the womb he took his brother by the heel,
  and in his manhood he strove with God.
He strove with the angel and prevailed;
  he wept and sought his favor.
He met God [1] at Bethel,
  and there God spoke with us—
the Lord, the God of hosts,
  the Lord is his memorial name:
“So you, by the help of your God, return,
  hold fast to love and justice,
  and wait continually for your God.”

A merchant, in whose hands are false balances,
  he loves to oppress.
Ephraim has said, “Ah, but I am rich;
  I have found wealth for myself;
in all my labors they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.”
I am the Lord your God
  from the land of Egypt;
I will again make you dwell in tents,
  as in the days of the appointed feast.

I spoke to the prophets;
  it was I who multiplied visions,
  and through the prophets gave parables.
If there is iniquity in Gilead,
  they shall surely come to nothing:
in Gilgal they sacrifice bulls;
  their altars also are like stone heaps
  on the furrows of the field.
Jacob fled to the land of Aram;
  there Israel served for a wife,
  and for a wife he guarded sheep.
By a prophet the Lord brought Israel up from Egypt,
  and by a prophet he was guarded.
Ephraim has given bitter provocation;
  so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt on him
  and will repay him for his disgraceful deeds.

The Lord's Relentless Judgment on Israel

13:1 When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling;
  he was exalted in Israel,
  but he incurred guilt through Baal and died.
And now they sin more and more,
  and make for themselves metal images,
idols skillfully made of their silver,
  all of them the work of craftsmen.
It is said of them,
  “Those who offer human sacrifice kiss calves!”
Therefore they shall be like the morning mist
  or like the dew that goes early away,
like the chaff that swirls from the threshing floor
  or like smoke from a window.

But I am the Lord your God
  from the land of Egypt;
you know no God but me,
  and besides me there is no savior.
It was I who knew you in the wilderness,
  in the land of drought;
but when they had grazed, [2] they became full,
  they were filled, and their heart was lifted up;
  therefore they forgot me.
So I am to them like a lion;
  like a leopard I will lurk beside the way.
I will fall upon them like a bear robbed of her cubs;
  I will tear open their breast,
and there I will devour them like a lion,
  as a wild beast would rip them open.

He destroys [3] you, O Israel,
  for you are against me, against your helper.
Where now is your king, to save you in all your cities?
  Where are all your rulers—
those of whom you said,
  “Give me a king and princes”?
I gave you a king in my anger,
  and I took him away in my wrath.

The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up;
  his sin is kept in store.
The pangs of childbirth come for him,
  but he is an unwise son,
for at the right time he does not present himself
  at the opening of the womb.

Shall I ransom them from the power of Sheol?
  Shall I redeem them from Death?
O Death, where are your plagues?
  O Sheol, where is your sting?
  Compassion is hidden from my eyes.

Though he may flourish among his brothers,
  the east wind, the wind of the Lord, shall come,
  rising from the wilderness,
and his fountain shall dry up;
  his spring shall be parched;
it shall strip his treasury
  of every precious thing.
 [4] Samaria shall bear her guilt,
  because she has rebelled against her God;
they shall fall by the sword;
  their little ones shall be dashed in pieces,
  and their pregnant women ripped open.

A Plea to Return to the Lord

14:1 Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God,
  for you have stumbled because of your iniquity.
Take with you words
  and return to the Lord;
say to him,
  “Take away all iniquity;
accept what is good,
  and we will pay with bulls
  the vows [5] of our lips.
Assyria shall not save us;
  we will not ride on horses;
and we will say no more, ‘Our God,’
  to the work of our hands.
In you the orphan finds mercy.”

I will heal their apostasy;
  I will love them freely,
  for my anger has turned from them.
I will be like the dew to Israel;
  he shall blossom like the lily;
  he shall take root like the trees of Lebanon;
his shoots shall spread out;
  his beauty shall be like the olive,
  and his fragrance like Lebanon.
They shall return and dwell beneath my [6] shadow;
  they shall flourish like the grain;
they shall blossom like the vine;
  their fame shall be like the wine of Lebanon.

O Ephraim, what have I to do with idols?
  It is I who answer and look after you. [7]
I am like an evergreen cypress;
  from me comes your fruit.

Whoever is wise, let him understand these things;
  whoever is discerning, let him know them;
for the ways of the Lord are right,
  and the upright walk in them,
  but transgressors stumble in them.

Revelation 3 (Listen)

To the Church in Sardis

3:1 “And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.

“‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God. Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you. Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. The one who overcomes (see 1 John 5:4-5) will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

To the Church in Philadelphia

“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: ‘The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.

“‘I know your works. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut. I know that you have but little power, and yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie—behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet and they will learn that I have loved you. Because you have kept my word about patient endurance, I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world, to try those who dwell on the earth. I am coming soon. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown. The one who overcomes (see 1 John 5:4-5), I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven, and my own new name. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’

To the Church in Laodicea

“And to the angel of the church in Laodicea write: ‘The words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation.

“‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself and the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, so that you may see. Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. The one who overcomes (see 1 John 5:4-5), I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”

Note:  Who IS "The one who overcomes"?

"Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ (Messiah) IS born of God,

  and everyone who loves Him (God/Jesus) who begot

  also loves him who is begotten of Him (others on Earth).

  By this we know that we love the children of God,

  when we love God and keep His commandments.

  For this is the love of God,

  that we keep His commandments

  (to love God above all things, and to love others by treating them as we would want to be treated)

  And His commandments are not burdensome.

  For whatever is born of God overcomes the world.

  And this is the victory that has overcome the worldour FAITH.

  Who IS he who overcomes the world,

  but he who believes that Jesus IS the Son of God!!!"

  (1 John 5:1-5)

Whoever clings to their love and faith in Jesus Christ and believes He is the promised Son of God (while reflecting His love and kindness towards others) to the very end of this short and trouble filled life on Earth (even through many afflictions and death) HAS "Overcome" (conquered) this World, and will then lovingly receive a crown and eternal life in His Kingdom of Heaven with true peace, joy, and great happiness (along with much needed rest) ... FOREVER!!!

“No eye has seen,
nor ear heard,
nor have entered into
the heart of Man
The things which God
has prepared (in Heaven)
for those who love Him.”
(1 Corinthians 2:9)
